Contemporary Music

Hearing a recording of Stockhausen’s Gesang der Jünglinge at the age of 15 blew Gregory away! This led him to exploring the wonderful world of contemporary composers, including such luminaries as Ligeti, Berio, Xenakis and Cage. In the 1970s he began conducting music by these and many other composers and he has become a leading exponent of music of today, conducting orchestras, ensembles and choirs in the contemporary repertoire throughout Europe, including many premieres.

He founded the electro-acoustic vocal ensemble, Singcircle, and made many appearances in festivals including the 1978 and 1980 Proms, toured extensively and made several commercial recordings and broadcasts.

Before university he spent 5 months in Vienna studying 12 note technique with a former pupil of Schoenberg. Although he has not used this system in his own compositions this was a strong influence in his creative development.
